Abstract

Recent developments in material and manufacturing technology have brought many exciting changes in the field of engineering. Engineers can benefit from wider selection of materials and processing techniques. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a multi attribute decision method (MADM) that utilizes structured pairwise comparisons. This method has been used widely in industry to aid selection process. The drawback of AHP is that the exhaustive pairwise comparison is tiresome and time consuming when there are many alternatives to be considered. In this paper, we propose a new approach to improve this limitation of AHP, the so-called Base Reference Analytical Hierarchy Process (BR-AHP). This study is accompanied by a case study to show the application of BR-AHP in engineering process selection.
