Abstract
Interoperability is required in digital libraries to enable them to query a large number of distributed, heterogeneous and autonomous data sources. In this paper, INEXP, an information exchange protocol for mediator-based interoperability, is presented. INEXP provides for the communication between mediator and wrapper, including query to data and schema, control command and result delivery. The protocol is designed to make the communication effective, efficient and secure. Some implementation issues are considered.
