Abstract
The objective of this paper was to explore the role of a Knowledge Management professional in today’s blue chip companies, to examine if and how the KM professionals differ from each other, and if Knowledge Management professionals on the whole match the earlier proposed models of an ‘ideal’ KM professional. The findings suggested that employing organisations did not have a clear idea of the KM role. This ambiguity was picked up the newly appointed KM professionals, who as a result felt uncertain and insecure in their KM role. Further, the findings supported earlier studies, in what the participants perceived the KM role to be (2/3 change agent, 1/3 information systems technology) although they perceived themselves primarily as management consultants/entrepreneurs rather than technicians/managers.
