Abstract

Output feedback is a method of using the ‘Data Encryption Standard’ (DES), and it is defined in Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 81 produced by the US National Bureau of Standards. The principle is shown in Figure 1. Its purpose is to provide a method of using the DES without error extension, since both encipherment and decipherment consist of adding a ‘key-stream’ modulo 2 to the data stream. It has been defined for the values m=1, 2, 3... 64 of the parameter m, which is the feedback width.
