Abstract
Biology is going through a dramatic change of its research paradigm. For the past 400 years biology was done without any significant involvement of mathematics. The first serious use of mathematics in biology was effected by genetics and its theories of Mendelian inheritance. Eventually, a solid analytical foundation was created for evolutionary biology. These developments are in a strong contrast to physics, which was very early forced to apply methods of mathematics in order to understand and model physical phenomena.
