Abstract
The problem of detecting chaotic behavior in real and synthetic earthquake flows is investigated. Time series for earthquake catalogs are constructed and processed to reconstruct properties of attractors of corresponding dynamical systems. The main idea of the reconstruction technique is to embed the phase space of a system into the so-called delay-coordinate space. Different ways of forming input data sequences are discussed. Comparative analysis of numerical results for real and synthetic catalogs is carried out. The synthetic catalog is obtained by means of the block models of lithosphere dynamics.
