Abstract

Melodic patterns of the so-called ‘intonation questions’ reveal a certain degree of similarity in many languages. A rise in pitch or a higher tone level signal another phonological category, since there are no other indications of the interrogativity in this type of utterances. Phonetic differences in the realization of IQs which pass unnoticed for speakers of one language may lead to a perception of a different sentence type by speakers of other languages. This seems to be the situation with intonation patters of Armenian perceived by native English speakers.
