Abstract

Based on the arguments presented in this paper, there is good reason to believe that natural language parsing, in its initial syntactic stage, does not need:

  • a highly structured lexicon

  • empty categories or trace elements, or

  • the goal of describing only the grammatical structures of a language.

As discussed here, experience in developing PEG, the grammatical component of a real-world language processing system, supports this position. Large-scale, real-world systems can be helpful in assessing the usefulness, and degree of validity, of theoretical linguistic claims.
