Abstract

How to determine the bit error rate and evaluate the quality from optical disc has been an important but ambiguous problem up to now. Many strategies concerning to it remain to be some treatments. Now, in this paper, we propose a new strategy to determine error rate (measured in bits, symbols,..) suitable for ECC design as well as for performance evaluation to optical disc. It is different essentially from those traditional ones in principle. As the foundation, it is based on the error correction codes, especially, on the analysis of decoding error rate from RS decoders. The precursory work for our strategy is a retreatment of weight-enumerator of codewords in RS codes, by which, new expression for decoding error rate is given. Based on it, a new strategy with systematic approaching scheme is established, In order To illustarte the advantagies of the new strategy and the crucial difference from those of the ordinary, we cited some heuristic examples. Finally, two appendices are attached, one is a special discussion concerning to requisite qualifications of RS codes to be employed for our strategy, in which, some numerical examples are given, the other one is a decoding procedure for RS codes, it makes the error correcting works in pipe-line, this is just our strategy looking forward for realization in practice.
