Abstract

The Digital Equipment Corporation CEC Karlsruhe and the University of Karlsruhe — along with other associated institutes — are cooperating in the field of computer-assisted learning (CAL). The joint project, codenamed Nestor (NEtworked Stations for TutORing), is intended to create a suite of integrated software aids giving high-level intelligent support for the planning, development, and execution of courseware in an environment of networked multimedia workstation/server topologies. The Nestor kernel technical team is currently growing to ten people permanent staff plus a large number of students and temporary aids.

We introduce the notion of (networked multimedia) courseware engineering in order to indicate that we intend to support continuous support throughout the ‘lifecycle’ of courseware, a high level of integration of tools and a common methodological framework.

In the remainder of this paper, we present fundamental Nestor requirements (chapter 1), feasability considerations (chapter 2) and the coarse Nestor architecture (chapter 3).

Presenting joint work of K. Coyle, B. Neidecker, F. Spanachi, P. Tallett, and I. Varsek of the Digital CEC Karlsruhe, W. Germany, and M. Duerr, T. Rüdebusch, and the author of the University of Karlsruhe
