Abstract
Information systems develop as a result of improving technological processes rather than as a result of extending information support methodologies. New computer technologies not only promote the creation of advanced information technologies but allow a reinterpretation and realization of old ideas such as, for example, the organizing and processing of non-linear text (hypertext).
In this paper we outline the fundamentals of a project on applying hypertext technology to the creation of tools for information retrieval and processing. Some possible features in designing and realizing a multifunctional information system are suggested.
