Abstract

The Meiko Computing Surface is a massively parallel distributed memory computer system based on multiple SPARC processors. Each Sparc module has its own local memory and interacts with other modules and the parallel filing systems through a high performance scalable internal network.

Meiko in conjunction with Oracle have implemented the ORACLE parallel server (ORACLE V6.2) and toolset for the Computing Surface. The ORACLE parallel server fully exploits the distributed memory multiprocessing architecture of the Computing Surface, providing a cost effective and scalable high performance RDBMS and application server.

The implementation of the ORACLE parallel server, ORACLE toolset and applications is the result of over 18 months of close collaboration between Meiko and Oracle. Following an intensive beta test phase at selected sites and a rigorous QA and validation process within Oracle, the development was announced as full product status in October 1991. The solutions now available from Meiko and Oracle provide a uniquely flexible and scalable environment which is in tune with new business practices and organisational trends. As an enterprise-wide IT infrastructure, the Computing Surface can be tailored to the precise requirements of the business.

  • Conflicting workloads such as transaction processing and information systems can be support concurrently without one affecting the performance of any other.

  • The system is responsive to change — capable of accommodating new applications and functions and growing to meet new demands.

This paper discusses the development, key features and benefits of the Meiko Computing Surface and details the implementation of the ORACLE parallel server.
