Abstract

This paper deals with the GMSK and π/4-DQPSK modulation schemes, which are adopted in digital mobile radio systems in Europe, America and Japan. Compared analyses have been carried out by software simulations in terms of BER (Bit Error Ratio) for the two modulation schemes with non-coherent detection by considering both an AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) channel and a flat Rayleigh or Rice fading channel in presence of thermal noise. In the case of the π/4-DQPSK modulation, which presents envelope fluctuations, nonlinear effects of the power amplifier at the transmission side have been taken into account, and a data predistortion technique has been considered to reduce intersymbol interference.
