Abstract

Parallel computer systems have reached a share of interest that is already far beyond the sacred halls of universities and research laboratories. The amount of performance delivered today theoretically allows for the tackling of so called grand challenge problems. But there is still the software-gap that keeps us from fully exploiting the performance of such systems.

Message-passing has become the most popular programming-paradigm to overcome this problem. One hardware-approach that is driving the development of parallel systems and parallel software is clusters of workstations. Being available nearly everywhere, they offer the opportunity to get parallel performance without additional costs.
