Abstract

In a study on computer-aided design work, 13 mechanical engineers performed a design task. Seven subjects used conventional tools (e.g. drawing board, calculator and catalogues), while six others used the computer-based design system KALEIT, including the knowledge-based system WIWENA. All subjects were videotaped, their actions categorized, and strain measurements were continuously recorded. Directly after the experiment, phases with high strain measurements were shown to the subject on video. The subject was asked to identify possible stress factors. This videoconfrontation indicated stress factors caused for example by the software's user interface, and allowed us to improve the software. An analysis of the knowledge-based system WIWENA has resulted in recommendations to change the information flow between the user and the system.
