Abstract

In this paper we propose to view Natural Language Generation as a constraint-based configuration process. Starting from the notion of paraphrases it is shown that an NLG system must be able to explain the existence of free paraphrases and of different styles which are related to interdependent choices during the generation process. It is then shown that traditional systems are not up to this because of their static generation strategies. As an alternative, constraint-based configuration is proposed. With the help of an example it is shown that a typical configuration system, PLAKON, can be used to generate natural language sentences.
