Abstract

Modern Geographic Information Systems should provide powerful user-oriented information systems for maintenance and analyses of spatially referenced data. The first part of the paper gives a gentle introduction into the area of GIS, their applications and provides a short overview of fundamental features in traditional GIS. Problems and deficiencies in the traditional point of view on GIS are indicated. The second part shows an impact of new computer technologies on future GIS and the use of GIS in future environments. Some important problems for future research are suggested. Fundamental features of future GIS are discussed and the concept of object-oriented data model and Geographic Information Management Systems are introduced. Exciting world of Open user-oriented GIS is proposed.
