Abstract

Biometric authentication mechanisms offer both new and improved possibilities for the authentication of users of mobile telecommunication systems. However, the nature of such systems is different in character to those where biometric mechanisms have been traditionally employed. This is primarily because the service provider can only trust the smartcard rather than the mobile terminal equipment and this smartcard has limited capabilities. This paper examines these issues and discusses a potential solution being implemented in the ASPeCT project.
