Abstract

Severely handicapped people are those who lack at least 70% of their physical and/or psychological functionalities (visual, hearing, physical and cognitive/language impairments). One of the main problems is the communication between them and with non handicapped people. However, some individuals, assisted and helped by their trainers, can reach normal levels of education

We propose a multimedia system (COMBLISS: Communication Bliss System) based on man-machine interface and object-oriented databases which aims to enhance handicapped people skills related to communicating with other people.

The conceptual architecture of our multimedia system is composed by three levels. Bottom: the conceptual schemata of databases with Bliss symbols and user context profile. Middle: a set of conceptual objects to model the real world. Upper: multimedia presentations of conceptual objects as representation objects.

Prototype results are slightly poor because it is not possible to show effectively more than 40 Bliss symbols per screen shot. But users must be trained before work with efficiency.
