The image produced from a target image to enhance the signals of a particular type, such as edges, ridges, or valleys is referred as a “feature map.” Face alignment programs typically rely on statistics computed from such features to distinguish facial features from other regions of the image. More sophisticated feature maps can be constructed to capture complicated local image structures and enhance the stability.
