Categories of Video Service in Video Video-on-Demand System

Definition

To support different requirement of a large-scale video-on-demand (VoD) system, various designs have been proposed based on the nature of different video services.

Video services can be classified into the following categories based on the amount of interactivity allowed and the scheduling policies of data delivery deployed [LITTL96, MA02]:

  1. 1.

    Broadcast (No-VoD): This service is similar to the traditional television broadcasting system where a user is a passive participant and has no control over the video session. A user only selects a specific programme to view provided by the system.

  2. 2.

    Pay-per-view (PPV): This service is similar to the cable TV system where a user signs up and pays for specific programmes scheduled at predetermined times. In this case, a user still does not have any control right for a particular video session.

  3. 3.

    Near video-on-demand (N-VoD): Users arriving within a short time interval and requesting for the same video are served by one video stream....
