Abstract

This chapter gives a brief overview of the SAMOS project which has been underway since 1991 at the Database Technology Research Group at the University of Zurich, the main goal of which is the development of an active object-oriented database system supporting advanced active functionality. The first implementation of the SAMOS prototype (release SAMOS 1.0) was completed in 1995 and is available in the public domain (http://www. ifi.unizh.ch/DBTG/SAMOS/release.html).
