Abstract
In this chapter we present two case studies on how diagrams were used to communicate across different academic fields: linguistics and mechanics. The problem we faced was to define a global structure from data usually considered at a lower scale. The definition of implicit rules in previous representations of phenomena was the first stage. Reasoning on measure and scale led to reuse of conventional reference systems. Changes in data disposition on the sheet of paper illustrate the intermediate step of the perceptive and intellectual construct.
