Abstract

Three decades ago, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) was developed as a business tool for reducing paperwork which, it was found, seriously affected the efficiency of many businesses. The design assumptions were based on the views that much of the routine business information that passes between organizations is highly structured and standard. These assumptions were the result of the structured and standardized methods and approaches to the design and use of IT within organizations, both small and large (Alter, 1996). The movement of information, it was thought, was merely mechanical, requiring minimal decision making and thus could be handled by a machine rather than the human being (EDI World Institute 1995; Tsai, Richards and Kappelman, 1995).
