Abstract
This work describes the sensorimotor performance of drawing simple geometrical figures (for example ellipses, squares and figures of eight) in the air using arm movements.
Right handed subjects were instructed to draw the figure with the tip of the index finger. These gestures were performed in standing position. Three conditions were examined: eye opened, eye closed and under visual guidance. The instruction given to the subjects was to execute the gesture in three different planes, sagittal, frontal and horizontal.
From our data it is evident that the figure is executed in a plane which is always rotated with respect to the requested reference plane. The figures also showed a clear deformation related to the distortion in its periodic components. The motor representation of the figure presents a minimal rotation and distortion in the sagittal plane, whereas the rotation and the distortion increase in the frontal and horizontal plane.
The nature of the distortion and the kinematic aspects of the gesture can be used as criterions for the gesture segmentation.
