Abstract
Praxis is a software engineering company. We develop software-based systems, and we want to do so in a controlled and predictable way, as an engineering discipline. We are therefore very concerned about the methods we use to carry out development. We carry out a wide range of projects and among them are several, large and small, where we have used formal methods. We use formal methods not because we are told to but because we think that they offer us advantages over alternative approaches. It is important to us to understand what those advantages are (if indeed they are real), how they come about, and what their limitations are.
