The First International Workshop on Active and Real-Time Databases brought together researchers and some practitioners in the areas of active and real-time databases. More importantly, it provided a much needed forum to address the issues involved in combining both technologies. I will try to summarize the discussion on active DBMSs, real-time DBMSs and the combination of both.
