Distributing the Optimistic Multiversioning Page Manager in the Jasmin Database Machine

  • Chapter
Book cover Database Machines and Knowledge Base Machines

Abstract

JASMIN is a functionally distributed database machine running on multiple microcomputers that communicate with each other via message passing. The software modules in JASMIN can be cloned and distributed across computer boundaries. One important module is the Intelligent Store, which is a page manager that includes transaction management facilities. It provides an optimistic, mutliversioning concurrency control scheme. The initial implementation of the Intelligent Store deals with centralized databases only. This paper describes our experiences in modifying the JASMIN Intelligent Store module to handle distributed databases. We explore system implementation techniques in the following areas: process structure, data structures, and synchronization on data structures.
