Abstract

In this paper, an external VLSI algorithm for the projection operation is presented. This algorithm uses a Bus Connected cellular Array (BCA) processing unit of fixed size to project relations of large size. The idea of incorporating a BCA processing unit as an algorithmically specialized component into a general purpose back-end database system is investigated. A performance analysis in terms of the overall system parameters shows that a significant performance improvement is acheived if the BCA processing unit is made part of the back-end relational database system.
