Definition

The goal of the assessment activity in the area of data quality methodologies is to provide a precise evaluation and diagnosis of the state of databases and data flows of an information system with regard to data quality issues. In the assessment the evaluation is performed measuring the quality of data collections along relevant quality dimensions. The term (data quality) measurement is used to address the issue of measuring the value of a set of data quality dimensions. The term (data quality) assessment is used when such measurements are analyzed in order to enable a diagnosis of the quality of the data collection. The term (data quality) benchmarking is used when the output of the assessment is compared against reference indices, representing average values or best practices values in similar organizations.
