Towards automatic semantic integration

Abstract

We present an Enterprise Information Integration (EII) system called SINTAGMA supporting the semantic integration of heterogeneous information sources. This paper focuses on the features of SINTAGMA allowing the partially automated creation of complex processes.

In contrast with monolithic EII implementations, SINTAGMA employs the idea of the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), as it consists of loosely coupled components. SINTAGMA combines data centric and process based integration: by providing appropriate wrappers, we support the integration of relational, object-oriented, and semi-structured sources, as well as Web Services in a unified framework.

The implementation of SINTAGMA uses constraints and logic programming. This allows us to provide functionality that is not supported by other integration frameworks. We provide design time reasoning to verify if a given integration scenario is feasible or not. This can be very useful, especially in cases where run-time testing is not a valid option (for example because of side effects). Based on the comparison of the information source models we also support semi-automatic creation of mappings between them, providing an initial integration scenario, which makes the the job of the integration expert easier.
