Abstract

This paper proposes a scatter search based approach for solving the unequal area facility layout problem with aisle areas. This novel approach simultaneously arranges facilities within a planar site, locates material handling points, and determines the aisle design by minimizing the total travel distance along the travel paths. The effectiveness of the presented approach is shown in a computational study using well-known test instances. The results indicate a significant advantage of taking aisle areas into account within the arrangement problem.
