Abstract

Smartphone is the most desirable gadget among the young generation for a decade. Greater availability of Wifi connection and mobile data made it easier to access the Internet on smartphones. Students’ performance may deteriorate due to excessive usage of smartphones. It is a concerned issue because proper education is vital for a promising career. However, the effects of smartphones on education and study habit are not well developed in HCI. This research paper intended to answer whether overuse of smartphones is hampering a student’s performance and CGPA. An app is being installed in the smartphones of 237 students from some universities in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This app recorded their activities on their smartphones for two months. This paper also conducted a two-month-long online survey (n = 244) and also took interview of some students. This paper suggested a prototype for minimizing overuse of smartphones and increasing productivity among students.
