Abstract

The professional career of a young researcher associated with a higher education institution can be increasingly viewed as of system character, in which the individual is fully aware of the different processes occurring at each stage of their career. In the study, We defined the young researcher as a person that successfully passes through a series of stages from the beginning of their PhD programme to the time of obtaining the habilitation degree. Further, we analyzed the different stages of career development of the individual. We described its micro- and macro-environment in each of the considered stages of career development, and analyzed the level of competition within the industry using Porter’s five forces. The main objective of the study that We set was to ascertain whether the rejection of the hitherto prevailing assumptions and structures of career management of a young scientist, is confirmed by the expectations of young research employees of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. For this purpose, We conducted an anonymous survey in the form of a questionnaire on a group of 45 eligible individuals. The results systematise the expectations of young researchers and indicate the need for changes in the process of managing their careers.
