Abstract

A theoretical model is proposed of the flow of steam and its condensation in the steam chamber that forms in an oil reservoir during steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). As usual in SAGD, it is assumed that the steam is injected through an upper horizontal pipe and liquid water is recovered through a lower parallel pipe. Numerical computations of the stream function and temperature are used to show that a realistic solution of the problem exists only when the injected mass flux of steam has a special value that depends on other parameters of the problem.
