Excessive Smartphone Use and Associated Physiological Disorders – A Survey on Research Status in India

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In our current generation, smartphone is considered a basic handheld device utilized for many tasks. Almost a billion people spend 50% of their time on any digital media like smartphone, tablet, laptop computer or television. Excessive use of the smartphone can cause physiological problems, mental disorders and so on.

OBJECTIVE: The key objective of the research is to identify factors and effects of smartphone addiction and how it is correlated with mental disorders. Furthermore, to examine the measuring techniques available to evaluate the addiction levels of smartphone.

METHODS: Bibliographic search was conducted through IEEE, science direct, PUBMED, PMC with the keywords’ physiological disorders, mental activity, usage duration, smartphone addiction and were limited to recent 10 years from 2010–2019 for literature.

RESULTS: Due to the rising trend of addiction to smartphones, physiological disorders and mental activities are becoming a negative concept and researchers have mostly focused on its harmful applications. Relatively, no studies were found in India even though the utilization is extremely high.

CONCLUSION: It is observed that most of the studies are from other nations, the research on this domain in India is considerably less and needs to be done, also the correlation between the smartphone addiction and physiological disorders are to be analyzed.
