Abstract

Software engineering education in Japan is an established field, with more students being increasingly attracted to this area. However, many Japanese academic institutions lack a vision of the global aspects of software engineering teaching. This work will present some of the lessons learned during an introductory software engineering course held at a Japanese university, in a multicultural classroom.

Besides the contents of the taught material, the various in-class activities and assignments are meant to make the students aware of the importance of cultural differences, not only when teaching software engineering, but also in future software development centered workplaces. Class participation levels during these activities of Japanese students vs. international students will be highlighted. This work will emphasize the need for culturally responsive teaching to be applied in a software engineering classroom and will offer a glimpse into a multicultural environment at an academic institution in Japan.
