A Model-Based Aircraft Function Analysis Method: From Operational Scenarios to Functions

Abstract

Function analysis is one of the most essential processes in aircraft development and is required by applicable standards. For new aircrafts, function analysis in concept design phase is the foundation stone of the following development and determines the project’s success or failure at the beginning. This article describes a model-based aircraft function analysis method as a supplement to the existing IDEF0 method. It introduces scenario analysis into function analysis and applies function-behavior transformation as principle. In contrast with IDEF0, this method provides a guidance on the elicitation of implement-independent high level functions and the model-based technique used makes the early verification and validation possible. An application on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) development is also presented, and the application result initially confirms the usability and effectiveness of the method.
