Abstract

Access to and use of computers has become essential for almost all aspects of life. Yet some people cannot use computers directly and need to use an assistive technology. But what if they need assistive technologies to use a computer but don’t own a computer? What if the only computers available to them are shared-use computers at their school, the library, or a community program? Or they need to borrow someone else’s; their tutor’s or gramma’s or a friend’s? It usually is not possible to install their AT on each of these computers. As a result, the strategies that all of their peers (who don’t have their own computers) use to access computers will not work for them. As a result, they have to use the computers without AT (if they can), not use one at all, or only have access to one during some hours in some locations. They are either severely disadvantaged compared to their peers or they are cut off from computers most (or all) of the time and consequently not be able to participate, compete, develop, or exhibit their potential and abilities. To address this, Raising the Floor working with the Trace Center and other researchers has developed a new capability for AT users. Called Assistive Technology on Demand (AToD), the new capability, along with Morphic, allows assistive technologies to appear on any computer an AT user sits down to. The software is now complete and in testing for deployment in universities and disability programs nation-wide.
