Abstract

Despite the increasing popularity of game streamers on live streaming platforms, the understanding of how perceived influence of game streamers affects audience video game engagement is limited. To address the research gap, this paper develops a research model by combining the self-determination theory with extant live-streaming literature. Results from an online field survey suggest that perceived influence of game streamers is positively associated with satisfying audiences’ needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, further promoting their video game engagement. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.
