Abstract

Currently, there are many kinds of applications, from light load e.g. web access to heavy load e.g. multimedia services, which operate over wireless network. The quality of service (QoS) for these applications is complex, especially the effectiveness of shared bandwidth between multimedia data streams. IEEE 802.11e was released with some QoS mechanisms, such as EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access), to provide effective bandwidth sharing between data streams in the network. However, this standard has not yet ensured fairness between flows, especially between short-hop and long-hop flows. In this paper, we examine the contention at both MAC and link layer and present a method that improves scheduling mechanism in order to achieve an appropriate level of fairness between data flows.
