Abstract

A mobile ad hoc network or MANET (Mobile Ad hoc NETwork) is an autonomous system of mobile platforms called nodes that are free to move about freely. This system can be isolated or have gateways or interfaces connecting it to a fixed network. Most performance evaluation models of routing protocols for ad hoc networks based on the assumption of an ideal radio channel, implying that the underlying physical phenomena are neglected. We propose to use a realistic physical layer by integrating the probability of transmission error characterized by a two-state Markov model in the different radio propagation modes. We measure the impact of such modeling to evaluate-the performance of Proactive and Reactive MANET protocols.
