Abstract
Data centers consume a large amount of energy which has a big impact on the operational cost and the environment. Saving a few percent of power consumption has a considerable impact on the running cost of data centers and on saving our environment. A simple and natural policy for saving power consumption in data centers is to turn off idle servers since these servers still consume about 60 % of their peak consumption. However, servers should be turned on again when the work load increases. Power consumption is needed to turn on an off server so that it can process waiting jobs. Therefore, limiting the number of servers in setup mode is proposed in the literature to reduce the power consumption by setup servers. We study the s-Staggered setup policy where at most s servers can be in setup mode at a time. While the s-Staggered setup policy may save power consumption it may also incur some extra waiting time and then the abandonment of jobs. In this paper, under the finite capacity setting, we present a simple exact analysis for the multiserver queueing model with s-Staggered policy and abandonment based on which we carry out the performance evaluation of power-saving data centers.
