Abstract
The promise of analyzing big data for improving social good and overall social welfare is great. Much of the work to date has focused on place-based data or de-identified data. However, there are significant challenges around accessing and using data that contains sensitive or confidential information that is needed to address health, social problems, disabilities, violence, and other of society’s biggest social challenges. This chapter addresses both the opportunities and the challenges and what analysts of big data working with social institutions must consider.
