Book cover Integration of Medical and Dental Care and Patient Data

Abstract

Many cross sectional and longitudinal epidemiologic studies have consistently found greater prevalence and incidence of periodontal disease in patients. The majority of mechanisms that accelerate periodontal disease (PD) are influenced bi-directionally primarily by inflammatory responses resulting from diabetes and oral infectious processes. For decades, medicine and dentistry have been practiced in silos. This interrelationship between diabetes and PD identifies a need to establish interdisciplinary care between the medical and dental providers. Early intervention and lifestyle modifications effectively delay or prevent incidence of diabetes. Leveraging informatics can support development of screening tools. The chapter provides an outline of the prevalence, systemic and oral manifestations surrounding diabetes, technological implications, existing risk assessment tools and care plans that can serve as a guide to improve the health of patients with diabetes and periodontal disease.
