Abstract
In this paper, a spatio-temporal model is proposed in order to distinguish spatial diffusion patterns of diseases. The procedure is based on the definition of different connection matrices that allow us to testfor temporal and space-time interaction effects on disease rates. When applied to the AIDS epidemic in São Paulo, Brazil, strong differences emerge regarding distinct categories of exposure. While the AIDS epidemic among IDUs follows an “in situ” growth model, the results for the heterosexual transmission group strongly suggest a spatial diffusion process. From the epidemiological point of view, these findings indicate that preventive strategies should be urgently renewed.
