Abstract
This paper describes a solution to support 3D Multi User Virtual Environments in a hybrid peer-to-peer Gnutella network which provides session control and distributed synchronization to collaborative applications. For that, two components compliant to the emerging multi-user extension to the MPEG-4 standard were implemented and integrated into the Gnutella network. This solution minimizes the disadvantages of hibrid solutions, based on proxies, which have to be re-configured whenever a new virtual environment is made available in the network. It also provides shorter network latency compared to content providers solutions based on the client-server model and can be deployed on devices with restricted capabilities.
