A Multi-channel MAC Protocol with Route Relay Capability for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract

A mobile ad hoc network is one consisting of a set of mobile hosts capable of communicating with each other without the assistance of base stations. In this paper, a MAC with route relay capability is suggested to alleviate adverse effects by inter-channel interference and path breakage in multi-channel mobile ad hoc networks. To appropriately cope with path breakage and channel interference, our MAC establishes a relay channel via some neighboring node for a released mobile node which has moved out of transmission range. Simulations study shows that our protocol effectively reduces communication overheads associated with many control messages necessary for re-establishing a path in the conventional protocols.
