Abstract

Solving the problems related to frequent handoffs and encapsulation overheads in 3G or 4G wireless IP networks has received a lot of attention. As such, host-based routing schemes have been proposed to provide micro-mobility management, yet their main drawback is a limited scalability. Accordingly, the current paper presents a new host-based routing scheme that improves the scalability, while providing a fast handoff and various efficient forwarding schemes. Furthermore, the new scheme is compatible with the basic Mobile IPv6 protocol. When applied to the HAWAII protocol in an IPv6 network, the new scheme eliminates the legacy limitations of micro-mobility protocols by providing both a seamless and transparent service and a fast and smooth handoff. A performance evaluation confirms the improved scalability
