Abstract

The paper presents a model for local and remote exception handling in the PVM library. A running process is augmented with the ability to throw remote exceptions to its master process and to receive exception handling actions. Main exception handling patterns for distributed applications were presented and Remote Exception Handler (REH) is introduced. REH is a dedicated server process that receives all remote exception events and maintains coherent information about the system. It has the ability to control each process in the virtual machine. Its impact on PVM environment is discussed.
